CoronaVirus: FG Orders Closure of All Schools Nationwide

The Federal Ministry of Education has directed that all tertiary institutions, secondary and primary schools nationwide be shut down over the outbreak of the Coronavirus in the country and as part of measures to contain the spread. This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr Sonny Echono.
According to a communique released by the ministry stated that the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has asked all principals of the 104 Unity Colleges “to fast-track the ongoing second term examinations and close shop until further notice.”
We have directed all higher institutions to close this weekend. Unity Schools that have completed their exams are to close immediately. Others are to hurry and close the latest on 26th March,” the statement partly read.
In the meantime, the minister said the management of all the unity colleges should immediately activate the necessary emergency procedures and processes such as the provision of alcohol-based sanitisers, and handwashing facilities among others.
Adamu Adamu also directed the Principals to immediately report any suspicious case to the nearest health authorities, emphasizing that nothing should be taken for granted at this delicate time of the global pandemic.

We’re yet to have any meaningful engagement with Federal Government over strike, says ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has disclosed that it was yet to have any meaningful engagement with the Federal Government since the union embarked on an indefinite strike. The university teachers, had on March 23, 2020, embarked on strike in protest against government’s directive for members to join the integrated payroll and personnel Information System (IPPIS), payroll software mandated for all public officials. The Federal Government had last year directed that all its employees should be enrolled under the IPPIS scheme by December 31 or their salaries would be withheld. The directive did not go down well with ASUU members and they never failed to make it known to their employers. ASUU: Why we won’t call off strike

  THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it will sustain its current strike if the Federal Government does not address its demands. Speaking at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) in Rivers State, ASUU President Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi said the government must first implement the report of the NEEDS assessment it conducted in 2012.
