A statement by chairperson and Secretary of kaduna State University (KASU) chapter of the Union, comrades tukur Abdulkadir and peter Adamu, warned that the nation's ivory tower were on the verge of collapse. We must continually track, engage and resist their excesses for the survival of public universities and the country at large. JAMB Warns Candidates Against Accepting Any Admission Outside JAMB CAPS

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned candidates against accepting any admission that does not pass through its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) as any offer of admission not validated on JAMB’S profile page or offered through the CAPS is invalid. According to JAMB, there have been complaints from the general public that three Public Universities have devised a method of “ offering admission ” to candidates outside the  Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS)  on their own designated portals. JAMB described this as a deliberate act done with the intent to lure unsuspecting candidates to accept other programmes  (courses) aside from their programmes  (courses) of choice. The board re-emphasised that the CAPS system is  designed among other things to :  i. prevent institutions from unilaterally changing or proposing a candidate for admission into other programmes (courses) other than his/her chosen one; ii. disallow ...

List of States that have announced School Resumption Dates

The Federal Government has given state governments and school administrators the privilege to determine when schools can reopen in their various states. What this means is that it is left for the various state governors to announce the date schools will resume in their various states. However, States and school heads are to conduct a risk assessment to ensure that their states and schools are in the right condition to reopen. For instance, they are to ensure classrooms are large enough or used in such a manner that will take care of social distancing. Provision should be made for isolation centres and other necessary equipment. Hostels should not be overcrowded as not to make students vulnerable. All these and other ones like provision of water for handwashing, provision of hand sanitizers, as well as other guidelines are to be put in place by schools before resumption. Many states have already announced their resumption date for academic activities while some are yet to make an ...

FG plans to kill education in Nigeria ― ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said that its ongoing strike was as a result of the federal government refusal to fund education as demanded, stressing that it is a deliberate strategy to kill education in Nigeria. ASUU, therefore, said it would unfold its next agenda if the Federal Government refused to negotiate with it on its demands as scheduled. The national chairman of the union Professor Biodun Oyeyemi said this in Ilorin at the weekend at the Town and Gown meeting it had with parents, students union leaders and alumni of universities in the country at the Africa Hall, University of Ilorin. He said the Federal Government with the right attitude can fund education in Nigeria, saying that giving N80bn bailout to banks was a clear indication. Professor Ogunyemi who gave graphical details of agreements ASUU had with the federal government since 2009, said they are yet to be honoured despite promises made to the union. He said that the plans of the federal governm...

ASUU, NASU locks LASU main entrance

The academic staff union of universities and the Non academic staff union by 7AM today has locked LASU main gate preventing lecturers, the vice chancellor and students from entering the school premises. This is as a result of the non payment of minimum wages by the Lagos state government. All attempt by the Vice-Chancellor to dialogue with NLC, ASUU, NASU members was not successful, as they insist that no one will be allowed into the university premises until their demands are met by the state government. They claimed that an increment in their salaries was promised by the Lagos State government more than a year ago and the promise was yet to be fulfilled. The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu two weeks earlier announced that tertiary institutions in the state will be reopened today,  September 14, 2020, after been shut for six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After resumption, what next

Alot will happen immediately after resumption of academic activities nationwide. Both staffs and students will be running helter skelter trying the best they can to complete their syllabus for the season. There will be chaos among students as there will be clash of classes. Lectures would be bridged as senior staffs will take advantage of the junior ones. It'll be so obvious on students that the academic session will be the most hectic compared it other sessions ever had. Fraudsters will take advantage of such  opportunities to defraud students all in the name of helping them. Texts and practicals that were previously missed will be difficult to be retaken and students will be given the option of pay and pass. Most lecturers will also make pay and pass optional since they might see it as a stressful deal trying to complete their course outline. Morals and discipline would be broken. Crime rates and malpractices will increase. When this time comes, students are advised to be e...

FG has abandoned colleges of education, lecturers lament

Colleges of Education (COEs) lecturers Thursday lamented that the Federal Government has abandoned the institutions. The lecturers stated that the federal government has been consistent with the under-funding of COEs in the country. They stated that between 2012 and 2017 the funds released as capital allocation to COEs by the federal government stood at just about 56% of the budgeted sums. The lecturers under the aegis of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) stated this during a press conference on Thursday in Abuja. COEASU President, Nuhu Ogirima, who addressed reporters, said the attempt to make the government fund colleges of education had fallen on deaf ears. He said: “The gross under-funding of COEs has been abysmally consistent with the federal government. Quite unfortunately, State governments toe the line of the federal government in this regard. It could be said that the federal government encourages irresponsibility towards funding obligations. “The issue...

Ibadan zone of ASUU comprises the University of Ibadan (UI), University of Ilorin (Unilorin), Osun State University (UniOsun), Kwara State University (KWASU), and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (...

Resumption saga: ASUU or FG, who's to be blamed

There have been controversies pertaining to the reason why there is delay in the resumption of academic activities for universities. The war between ASUU and Nigerian government seems to be an unending one. Issues and disagreement are always arising between them. An African proverb says “ when 2 elephants fight, the grasses around suffers most ”. The proverb is highly applicable to the dispute between the Academic staff union of universities and Federal government. It's been 7 months since academic activities were suspended indefinitely as a result of the widespread of Corona virus though ASUU was already engaged with indefinite strike before the lockdown. With situations on ground, schools are eligible to resume academic activities but ASUU said that resumption won't proceed until the government attend to their demands. The government on its side isn't taking any bold step to ensure they attend to ASUU so that academics will resume Successfully. This disagreement between...

some student's behaviours that trigger academic failure
